【Background】 I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Public Health at Monash University in Australia and have a background in nursing. I am fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and have experience studying and working in both Hong Kong and Australia. My academic performance has been strong, with a current GPA of 3.9/4.0 and WAM of 85.2%. 【Teaching / Tutoring Experience】 I have experience providing online Chinese tutoring to kindergarten and primary school students, including students from international kindergartens and Putonghua-medium primary schools. I have also volunteered as an online Chinese tutor for non-Chinese-speaking primary school students, mainly helping them strengthen their Cantonese and Chinese language foundations. 【Strengths】 I am comfortable working with students from different cultural and language backgrounds and aim to create a supportive learning environment where students can learn at their own pace and build confidence.

Emily Shek was born and raised in Hong Kong and started studying music when she was 6 years old. Her first instrument of study was the guzheng (Chinese zither) at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) under Man Wai Zhen and Luo Jing. When she was 12 years old, she started learning the suona (a reeded aerophone) at the Hong Kong Government’s Music Office. During those years, Shek was a member of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, the HKAPA Junior Chinese Orchestra, and the HKAPA Guzheng Ensemble. In 2016, Emily began her education at BYUHawaii and started learning percussion under Dr. Darren Duerden and instrumental conducting under Ernest Taniguchi. While at the university, she has been a member of Shaka Steel, the World Jazz Orchestra, Ko’olauloa Symphonic Winds, and Ka Pa Kani Ko’ele O Laie. She was featured as a soloist with the Hawaii Symphonic Band performing the Butterfly Lovers’ Concerto. On top of this, she has been an active face of the music department through solo performances in devotionals, donorfunded events, and in the “Scholarship Competition Winners’ Recital” in 2018.
